Thank someone for "Following their Calling"

I have had occasion to seek medical help recently.  Many of the health care workers seemed to be in their element, working in their calling.  As I face surgery again, I have prepared thank you notes different from anything I have done in the past.   Here is a sample:

 

Thank you for your warm heart and caring spirit.
Thank you for taking the time to Follow Your Calling and pursue a career in helping others.

Encourage Someone's Gift

A note for encouragers…


Encourage someone by confirming their gift.

 

 Hi, I’m new to the Follow Your Calling Team, but not new to the Idea of affirming someone.  Character First (www.characterfirst.com) promotes the idea of encouraging someone by using DIB

  • Define – define the character trait
  • Illustrate – Illustrate how an individual demonstrated the character trait
  • Benefit –  give the benefit of the character trait demonstrated

I have recently tried this format when I have understood a person’s motivational gift.

A lady who I know was crying because of a stranger’s sad life events.  “I am always crying” she said.

I responded to her with:

  • Defining a motivational gift.
    • Becky, you have the gift of mercy.  That is how God created you.  It is a true gift that you can cry with a stranger and feel their pain.  They know that you really care.
  • Illustrating
    • You feel the pain and the joy of others.   I’m thankful for you and rejoice with you in your gift.  Be glad for it.
  • Benefit
    • People know you really care.

Becky smiled and her face just lit up.

Living with Purpose

Sat next to Joe Coors recently at a weekly luncheon called The Narrow Gate here in Denver. Joe got us all thinking with Proverbs 29:18.

18 Where there is no vision [no redemptive revelation of God], the people perish; but he who keeps the law [of God, which includes that of man]—blessed (happy, fortunate, and enviable) is he (Amplified).

Joe explained that in Hebrew "perish "means to wander and be lawless.

It breaks my heart and the heart of God when people choose not to follow God's way. Seeking God first brings about insight, wisdom and purpose.

After becoming a new creation by accepting Jesus, Joe Coors has rejected his family's beer business. His purpose is to be used by God to bring glory to Him by building up His kingdom. On The CALL Vocational & Life Purpose Guide, Joe scores highest in the gift/life purpose of CONTRIBUTING (giving).

Joe knows his calling and is living with purpose. You can tell by his fruit. He is blessed (happy, fortunate and enviable).

Discovering Innate Gifts

At Follow Your Calling, we believe in what we call the 4 D's to your calling in life. These are:

1.        DECIDE who you say Jesus Christ is. Your answer is the most important decision you will make.

2.        DISCOVER how God wired you (your unique gifts, interests, abilities and personality-- PURPOSE).

3.        DEVELOP yourself (grow up and mature) to do your best in what you have to work with.

4.        DEDICATE your life to serving others and honoring God.

Innate gifts are those natural bents, motivations and inclinations that come easiest to us. We are born with a mix of these tendencies. At Follow Your Calling, we measure the big seven listed in Romans 12:6-8.  We believe every human is born with a motivational gift mix. We then use those gifts to serve others for God's glory as we grow and mature.

There are no shortages of ways to DISCOVER your innate gifts. Here is a partial list of ways to discovery:

1.        Get to know God. He wants an intimate relationship with you.

2.        Read His word daily (The Bible). It is living and active.

3.        Pray. If you ask for wisdom, it will be given to you.

4.        Reflect. Your life has a pattern to it. 

5.        Forgive others. Do not let bitterness blind you.

6.        Ask others who love you to tell you (validate) what they think you are good at.

7.        Take a reliable affirmation tool like The CALL for valuable insights or confirmation.

You Can't Flunk This

One of the best selling books of all time (other than the Bible) is The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren.

What hits me the most  when I read and re-read the book is in Chapter 30..."Shaped  for Serving God". Rick explains there are two things that cause us trouble, especially in the church. These are:

1.    Gift-projection.(when we expect others to think like we do).

2.    Gift-envy (when we get jealous of others)

The truth is God made each of us different for good reason.

At Follow Your Calling we like to say that you cannot flunk who you are. Whatever your personality, abilities, interests and gift-mix is, that is best for you. You are wonderfully made. You are made in God's image. There is only one you.

Paul uses the word picture in Romans 12 of a body.  Each of us is a body part. A hand is not a leg. We need each other to function.

Once we accept who we are, we are ready to maximize our spiritual impact.

Romans 12 also tells us to make an honest and accurate (sober) estimate of ourselves. One way to start this process is through The CALL Vocational and Life Purpose Guide.
